Little do mere mortals realize

They wait for us
Silently following our footsteps
Watching over us
Silent, loving sentinels
Protecting us through the rest of our journey
For when it is our own turn
Our little guardians traverse the void to meet us
Happily showing their excitement
As we return to our final home
To lay in our laps
As did they once before
